Psyte – Introduce yourself and explain a little more about the sound you play. Where do you live? How long have you been playing?

Giuliano - Well. I started as a chillmaker I guess about 10 years ago, in Geneve, Swiss, playing Juncle Jazz and Drum n Bass. For the next years came trip hop eith dub between, eletronic groove and funk. Those were the most conected styles with us smokers. After studied Musichoteraphy, I start the ambient joined dub athnosphere odyssey. Well, for end, who wouldn’t like to be able to listen and divulge all the prophets ans artists which most believe? I really thank Jah for all that He has been doing for me and still does, and for making me travel a lot to this country, and also, some places in this world too. But nowadays I found my peace down here in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. I live 2 squares from sea and I can say how I feel blessed for living what I do, and I cant explain to you a lot about it, but it’s in here and simply with Jah Love that I create all necessary emotions to play.



Psyte – We know that in Brasil, Chill Out at parties and trance festivals had appear long time ago, tell us how was it at the beginning and what year was that?

Giuliano - Well.. Chill started about year 2000, in Curitiba, Paraná, when I came back from Swiss! Together with Shasco in some privet parties, very cool, roots situation. So Xxxperience came to Curitiba for the first time. Together with Jeje they made the first Chill in Brasil. I played for 12 hours at a roots DJ cabin at the floor and in my knees. Picups and cd players at time were a joke next todays cd players.It was a great vibe man. After some parties with internacional djs playing, like max eticnica rec et cristoff 3d vision rec at loto f Curitiba’s clubs, I got to go to Trancendence in Alto Paraíso. There I got to meet Rafa that was also playing there.He let me play cause he wasn’t feeling so good. Playing there, I knew Fish org from Solipse Festival wich made Trancendence’s Chill Out, same which some time after that called me to play at Solipse 2001 edition in África. After Trancendence I took of for São Paulo where we get the real chill philosophy started!! Till today, for me, all free full moon parties were unspeakable man! All founders, Smurf, Marcelão. Zaca, Gen, Gui, Charles, Cristian, Schasco, Rafa, Talita, Michel, Gil Mahadeva, and a bunch of people which my memory didn’t record, ops. But nowadays, chill makers culture enlarge a lot. In every city, chill vibration family grow. Finally, lot of light and positive vibration for all jedis and people who listen chillout music. Jah Bless all!!



Psyte – And how was it this process, there were any diferences to how it is actually?

Giuliano - The process was the union and will force from a lot of people sharing the same chill out purpose – (Calma aí). Also we had to fight a lot to earn space inside parties, and we had to prove that us chillmakes had the strength to carrie people who dragged theirselves, really tired from strong and repetitive beats at dance floor. Then came the first parties freaks time, which was a tuff fase. But with the chill vibration we could bring back lot of freaks. (helo helo marcian, earth speaking). Soft music, low frequencies. So, I guess the union and nature celebration together with brotherhood feeling among all human being, that shows of Chill Out was made to you feel at home, better, you are already home, in nature. Our ancestors lived like this, so, in some how, certainly, be welcome to your home. Then the chill out interest emerges at parties and festivals which started to gether, and , for sure, people started to have more conscience of what we’re doing. Then we came to what chill out became nowadays, well received, joinfull, not justa t parties, but also at all kinds of places. I, myself, play at the beach www.kiwibar.com.br, there Chill Out is well listen by over 60 people and even by children. Of course, the sonority have changed and now there are several styles which oscillate as people and hours, and, for sure, as nature. Nowadays it got more easy to say eletronic world music. Finishing, congratulations to all whom had strengthenn to keep their culture alive.



Psyte – Which parties had you most like to play?


Giuliano - Trancendance, Solipse, Voov, Shiva Moon, Solaris, Freak*a*delic, Daime Tribe, South Orbit, new years eve at Kiwi Bar, praia Brava de Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Maori, Núcleo, Trasformation, Universo Paralelo, Orion Dance, Klatu, Union, Jardim Elétrico and many others.




Psyte – Which was the best Chill Out?

Giuliano - The best Chill Out was in África, at Solipse Festival’s After part, 2001. Were 10 days at Junglejunction Island, next to Zimbabwe. There I played Chill at afternoons and loto f dub. Also rootslizing the Island, natives together with Laurent from Hight Light Tribe, made the perfect sound track with lot of Jah vibe man. Glorious demonstration of percussion culture, bigger lesson of life. In the magical nights playing underground trance and to close with golden key, last day moon eclipse hapenned. Something to stop music and everybody watched the moon appearing by the river. Man, best chill out life style alive... Jah love moment.




Psyte – Which were the greaters allies to Chill Out’s changes and growing in Brazil?

Giuliano - First of all, for sure, spiritual was JAH. But here in Brazil I have a list: in first place is Milton, Teko from Klatu and Nena, Daime Tribe which believed in Chill Out at parties (first of all was in a small Daime Tribe at a dam I guess, and later at a cave under lot of rain, me and Smurf we hold much stuff, but as I said, family..) then together with Rica, Marcelão, Milton, Nena, Diogo (org boom festival) we had one of the scene’s coolest and important moment, Ypy Poty Festival, there Chill Out was blessed!! In second place is Marcelo VOR and Ivan which invited myself and Smurf to make Freak*a*delic’s Chill that for me was the best Chill at the time in clubs. It had everything, puffs, air condicional and always full of people. There, Chill Out got strenght and expanded to a lot of diferent places, an example of that nowadays its ID which remind this vibe very well. In Third place is Vistar e Ateda from Trancendance, which were great allies building na Oca and, even before it, they already had a seriour infra. It was really the family warriors vibe!! At this wonderful Oca, one festival before this last one, I had one of the best moments of my career, dance floor finished last day and there was I, at Oca, full of people dancing around fire, magic moments. In fourth place is Du Serena and Soneca, which together with Solaris, has been defending alternative electronic music very well at São Paulo, big respect. In fifth place cames André from Transformation, best Chill Out river, speechless... The sixth place is the most important of all, all the admires, composers, musicians, conected with this relaxing sonour culture and simple life style!! And, of course, all those who had a little patience. It really worth it... thanks to all those who believed in this life style (Chill Out – “Calma aí”) or Chill Out Life Style.



Psyte – Giuliano, I know that you studied Musichoterapy, just like me. Why dont you tell us what is the idea which musichoterapy has about Chill Out.

Giuliano - Well, as I already said, it has a proposal to bring a bigger integracion of the human being with his sonours nature, activating sensations, emotions, memories, and, for sure, by the teorical side, it envolves philosofy, religion, ethnies and lot of waves and sonours frequency control. All sound has a quantic structure which continuously reverberates its notes, and like this making the rhythmic células. That come from our primary communication. We fell more the sound that we rationalize, then basically with an intention tunning, we all can be conected with this amazing energy from the present time and speaking the same language. Just like all others living creatures of cosmos does: here at earth, plants and animals, all of them comunicates through this vibe and, on and on... always respecting and following the ancestral primordial philosophy. Like this, the whole Universe speaks between itself. I call this Jah Love Universal... Making more simple, its to love and praise the Primordial Creator among every other things, allowing His Light reflecting inside of self, allowing also Jah guides you eternally through the sacred way of life. Chill-Art: OCA – Trancendence’s Chill Out

The other side of Alto Paraíso’s Festival – Goiás, closed vegetation, dry soil road and dust every where, marked sunny days and cold nights in one of the major electronic music festivals in Brazil. Not for less, one of the best Chill Out we have ever seen in trance circuit. The indian Oca caught on fire and definitly showed of that it's emerging as a new search inside electronic music and electronic organic psychodelism.

The deliciousos chai chill and night fire warmed up and hipnotized all peolple during the entire nights. Those are just a small example of innumerable attractions which were near to come in OCA during the five days of Festival.

Thursday: 14/07: Oca’s opening. Especial espace for gathering, meetings and re-meetings of all kind of people. Ekanta opened the DJ set. The Dogs and Colírio e Óculos Escuros’s made disappointing lives, both from Brasília. The first one tried to make the electronic organic fusion, however his sound is still very immature and un-alive. While Colírio e Óculos Escuros were too convencional and totaly out of magic. Unnecessary.

Friday: 15/07: Everything was flowing very well at the partie and DJ Danyel’s set was one of the most marking sets: electronic experimental jazz fusion. I (Sallun) played right after him, electronic ethnic fusion. Lot of energy!!!

The english, Ott’s open live was marked by many machines interactions, one of the first ones which have came to Brazil for one single Chill Out presentation, it was sensational!! When we got to talk, he said to me he’s really glad to be playing here and praised brasilian “good vibrations”, so much different from his esnobes compatriots. He also covered his ears while passing by dance floor, saying that it was just “noise”. I enjoyed his comments very much, we laugh together walking down to producer house to take a cold shower. Nego Moçambique’s live shook Chill Out up and had big merit for making people dance all night. In general, his sound was very well said, but to me, after seeing Ott plays, Nego Moçambique didn’t excited me.

Aquiles woke Oca up Saturday (16/07) with his DJ set characterized by analogical grooves and dub sessions, at the same time he was warming up for our live – Pedra Branca – which would be starting by noon time, right after João Ciriaco’s set. By 11 o’clock Oca was getting full of people, however, for some delays caused by sound pass, only by half noon we get started what would be one of our best and strong presentation in parties and festivals. We never had this kind of feeling before, this great energy being exchange with public: very flowed and intense. We got completely surprised and thankful for being able to feel in our souls the magic and people giving in for it. After that, DJ Battan and Cami had entered in scene, both from Brasília and Mantric Manbo’s live, from Yagé crew.
Saturday’s dawn to Sunday, DJ Soneca’s set (SP) was pretty amazing, especially it’s first part, where he abused of mixings and percussions sounds, trompete, flutes, sax jazz and grooves trip hop.

Sunday (17/07), Danilo and Taty, both from São Paulo, always full of energy, hiting lot of brasilian popular music. In other time I hear Pindorama, a studio project that I have with Soneca (Trotter). When arriving Oca, I got to see DJ Nathy, from Brasília, playing the Lives Compilation CD, produced in São Paulo, that I gave to her, making a class and very nice Chill Out set.

Sunday’s dawn to Monday, DJ Giuliano present his tradicional dub set with many analogical and digital vertents, always exploring very well the mixer and CDJ. Gether with him, many people were dancing around the fire, looking up to the moon light and stars, drinking chai and hugging old and new friends. During this joinfull atmosphere, Synthetic Sapiens’s made his incredible electronic organic plastic art. VJ Charlie and plastic artist Marcelo Jaz, hited of a great and awesome picture, hipnotizing people expectation for each new movement in his work’s plasticity. Charlie took a picture of the fire and placed on a digital screen, complementing Marcelo Jaz’s painting. Fantastic!!

Monday, 18/07: Big emphasis for Breno Gradel Hobbit’s jam project, and his friend’s Live from S.J. do Rio Preto, Divina Metamorfose. Also known as Hyperceptiohm in Dance Floor, they played downtempo with athmospheric flutes and percussions in Chill Out. At night time, closing dance floor, Chill Out, under DJ smurf command, alternating musical styles till tuesday morning (19/07), last day of festival. The Oca vibrated and announced all earth and cosmo’s sonorous sources.

DJ Giuliano resident at Kiwi Bar

Kiwi Bar at Praia Brava (Beach) in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, it's a place whit natural traces still intact. Great waves breaking down, as for this reason surfers highly frequent this beach, and for sure, a bunch of others people whom seek for a calm and nice place to be.

The Bar looks like a beach house, wiht wooden chairs and tables, sand floor mattresses, puffs, available for free to clients, there are also showers and bathrooms for all those who frequent the beach. Massages are given to clients while they enjoy a nice time and good music.

Nowadays Kiwi Bar counts with DJ Giuliano residence, which will be playing everyday starting in October till summer time 2006 ends. Besides its paradisiacal structure, nice and tastie food, peoople whom frequent the Bar can also enjoy highest quality music, lots of dub music, ambient, lounge and deep house.

UNION: How did you start do play?

DJ GIULIANO: Well.. I was influenced by DJ Pako's set and by the best of brasilians DJs at the time (92 to 96). I took courage and went to live in Europe, settling down in Swiss for about five years where I had contact with Squad Pubs. One of them adopted me as they resident DJ, Cyber-T (artamis.org). For start (97) it was to hard, I was playing with 2 diskmans and one unequalized mixer, roots situation...Anyway, with a lot of will force and faith in Jah... today here I am... I developed a proprer skill of playing and samplesinthetizing the sounds and this way I got to interact with artists which I respect and like very much.

UNION: What style did you used to play and what style do you play currently?

DJ GIULIANO: In Swiss I used to play Junglejazz, triphop, Ambient, nowadays I'm more into amb dub, downtempo, dub-triphop, lounge and deep house.

UNION: The Electronic scene has changed a lot lately, which of them were the main changes in your conception?

DJ GIULIANO: Well.. sonorously speaking, were many and good changes. The Chill Out grew very much in brasilian electronic scene. And nowadays not just in the psy trance commnunity, also the oldests electronic tribes start to adhere into more calm and chill rithims. The dub music took place in differents ambients like coffe places, bars, clubs... Jah bless us!! Maybe thats because it's up music style along with naya rithimy, it helps a lot this world, and all of us need more contact with spiritualysm, union and joyfull.. Lounge music earned respect and inportance into brasilian society while expressing a sonorous confort of soft melodies and slow beats, getting along with harmony and philosophy of not just "being well", but also "feelling well". Another great change was the Chill Will project creation, by DJ Schasco, offering a new base to Chill Out Culture. For sure, another great fact was DJ Soneca representing Brasil in the first Sônica Festival, in Italy. And, no doubts, Pedra Branca's launched CD, initiating a new fase to Chillout World, incorporating musicotherapy with folklore.

UNION: Which artists had influenced your sound?

DJ GIULIANO: Mix Master Morris, Kruder, Snap, Mad Professor, Augustus Pablo, Bob Marley, Soa Nago, and down here in Brasil, Ponto de Equilíbrio, Gongo Naya and Gilberto Gil, and Nação Zumbi.

UNION: About new productions and projects which had appeared, which of them calls your attention?

DJ GIULIANO: Citing a few projects: Afro Celt Sound Sistem, Prefuse and Hestatic, Organic-grooves, Seeds and 3adub.

UNION: Where are you living right now and how is the Chill Out scene there?

DJ GIULIANO: After a long time living in babylon, "chilling" the brasilian concrete jungle (São Paulo), I came back to south. Nowadays my adreess is Florian�polis, Santa Catarina, close to the sea. Chill Out scene is growing and getting respect more and more down here. There's a Chill culture earning place, people here already listen to calm sounds by nature. Right now I'm making emissions to Itapema Radio, 93.7 FM, for a one hour chillout radio show. Jah Bless us!!!

UNION: What is exactly sunset sessions project?

DJ GIULIANO: It's a sand floor project, and by that I mean a lot of nice and beautiful people at the beach warming up to night time (parties). So, it begins at four p.m. in Praia Brava - Itajaí - SC, playing at Kiwi Bar (www.kiwibar.com.br ). My intention is to make a warm up music set that goes til 6:30 p.m, from there, DJs guests starts to play house music and progressive house til bar closes.

UNION: Which were the major places that you�ve already played and what was the most meanfull to you?

DJ GIULIANO: Well, had been these, the first Exxxperience in Curitiba. The Solipse Festival, happened in Zâmbia 2001 ( África), that also was the higher moment of my carreer. There I played 3 sets which were 2 by day time and one by night time!!. Voov and Shivamoon (2002) in Germany also stayed in memory. All Trancendence editions, Klatu club together with Neuromottor, Freak*a*delic club, where the first Chill Out in a Brasilian Club was opened. And, for sure new years at Kiwi Bar (2004) where 6 thousand people danced (dont stop til you get enough) Michael Jackson (hahaha).

Dj Giuliano plays dub on MTV


Dj Giuliano, one of the ambient artists of Eletronika Crew, will be playing his dub set at MTV, on Gordo a Go-Go, the TV show from João Gordo, next Thursday.

The TV show will also have the interview of the rock band IRA! Which will be also playing. Dj Giuliano, who also played in many clubs and festivals around the world, like Solipse Festival 2001 (Zambia) and Voov Experience 2002 (Germany) says he'll be playing only on vinyl records from his collection that he got traveling around the world.

On 29th of July, Thursday, 22 p.m. (local time) on MTV.
Remakes on Friday 3 a.m, Saturday 0:00 and Sunday 11:30 p.m.

DJ Giuliano has devoted much of his last 13 years contributing to the Chillout culture.Giuliano first encountered DJ mixer in 1997 by playing in fashion shows with Rodrigo Soares in Swiss, were he was living until 1998 and quickly got recognized for his unique taste of sound.

A year later he got contact with the alternative scene in Geneve along with Artamis.org, gained a residency at a popular Geneve club called “Cyber-T” and mixing at “Pigme”, “Green Local” (places know as “squad pubs”). Also producing Swiss Ford Model’s soundtrack, since then Giuliano has been able to show his talent DJ skills by acquiring residencies in a number of well respected clubs.

For three years Giuliano study Musicotherapy at “Du Rone University” – Geneve – Swiss. His work could be heard across radio “basic.ch et couler3 fm”. Giuliano draws on a wide range of musical influences. His style includes everything from Trip hop, eletronic dub, chill out e ambient music where he gets much of his inspiration.

Meanwhile, he dedicated a large portion of his life playing at clubs and parties such as “Bule”(underworld pub), “Lousanne” (La bo) and “Latour”. Moved back to Brasil in 1999 performing at a number of magers raves in Curitiba (PR). DJ Giuliano was pionner in Chill Out scene in Brazil while producing free “Full Moon” parties, making the Chill Out movement stronger.

Brasilians biggest festivals such as Ypy Poty, Celebra Brasil, Solaris, Brasilians Festival, “Tranceformation”, Orion Dance, Daime Tribe, Union, Green Forest, Xxxperience, Ecologic, invited Giuliano to play in them Chill Out.
Nothing satisfies him more than his audience understanding, dancing and enjoying a nice time listening to good music.
In 2001, “Solipse Festival” in Africa (one of the world’s mager psycodelic festival) invited him to represent Brazil in them Chill Out. While he was there also played in a island located in Victoria Fall – “Jungle Juction-afterparty of solipse” and Umbar Sound Sistem (Livingstone).
End of 2001, DJ Giuliano played for “Earth Dance”, Cachoeira Alta (MG) (witch is a party who happens in many countries around the world at the some day to celebrate live and to collect money in order to help the “Tibet Free” movement).
One year later He was DJ resident for “Freak-a-delic”, 2002-2003.
From that point on Giuliano performed in “Voov Experience” and “Shiva Moon” in Germany. Got back to Brazil in the end of year 2002 initiating his “warm up” project being able to get residence in “Klatu Barada Nikto” – São Paulo (SP) in 2003.


In 2004, Giuliano made an appearance at MTV – Brazilian Music Television – playing his Dub set on João Gordo’s TV Show – Gordo a Go-Go. He played only with vinyl records from his collection that he got traveling around the world.

He's still performing Chill Out music in many parties and festivals around Brasil. Although he took residence in “Kiwi Bar” – Praia Brava de Itajaí (SC) where he plays to sunset sessions, lounge, deep house and ambientdub.

Presently, DJ Giuliano represent Interchill Records, a canadian Lounge & Chill music label.

UNION: Como você começou a tocar?

DJ Giuliano: Então. Influenciado pelo set do DJ Pako e pelos melhores DJs brasileiros da época (92 a 96)tomei coragem e fui morar na Europa, parando na Suíça por uns 5 anos aonde tive contato com Squads Pubs. Sendo adotado como Dj por um deels, o Cyber-t ( artamis.org ). No começo (97) era muito difícil, eu tocava com 2 diskmans e mixer sem equalização, roots situation ... Mesmo assim, com força de vontade e fé in Jah ... hoje aqui estou eu, desenvolvi um jeito próprio de tocar e samplesintetizar os sons e assim interagindo com os artistas que gosto e respeito muito ....

UNION: Qual era o estilo que você tocava e o que você toca atualmente?

DJ Giuliano: Na Suíça eu tocava Junglejazz ,triphop, Ambient, atualmente estou tocando mais nessa vibe amb dub, down temp, dub-triphop lounge e deep house.

UNION: A cena mudou muito nesse tempo, quais foram as principais mudanças?

DJ Giuliano: Bom, sonoramente falando foram muitas e boas mudanças. O Chillout cresceu muito na cena eletrônica brasileira mas agora não só o psy trance community mas também as antigas tribos eletrônicas que começam a aderir aos ritmos mais tranqüilos. A dub music tem dominado alguns diferentes ambientes como cafés, bares, clubs...Jah bless us !!!! Talvez pode ser pelo seu estilo up music com naya rithimy ,ajuda muito nesse mundo,que todos nós precisamos de um pouco mais de contato com espiritualidade, união e alegria... O Lounge Music, que ganhou destaque na sociedade brasileira,ao expressar um conforto sonoro de melodias suaves e batida slow, com muita harmonia e filosofia de não só “estar bem” mas também “se sentir bem”. Outra grande mudança foi o surgimento do projeto Chill Will, do DJ Schasco, uma nova base para a cultura Chill Out, dando novas e chances para mostrar a sua independência. Outro grande destaque foi o DJ Soneca, tendo representando muito bem o Brasil no primeiro Sônica Festival, na Itália. E, sem dúvidas, o lançamento do CD do Pedra Branca, que deu início a uma nova fase ao chilout world implantando musicoterapia com folclore

UNION: Aonde você esta morando e como e a cena chill out ?

DJ Giuliano: Depois de um longo período na babilônia, “chillautizando” a concrete jungle basileira, (São Paulo), voltei para o sul do país. Moro hoje em Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, perto do mar. A cena aqui tem ganhado muito respeito crescendo cada vez mais. Há uma cultura Chill se desenvolvendo, as pessoas já escutam sons tranqüilos por natureza aqui. Atualmente faço emissões para a Rádio Itapema, 93.7 FM, em programa com duração de uma hora tocando chillmusic, Jah bless us !!!!

UNION: O que é exatamente o projeto sunset sessions ?

DJ Giuliano: É um projeto sand floor, ou seja, com muita gente bonita na praia em um clima de preparação para as baladas (noite). Então começa as 4 horas da tarde na Praia Brava de Itajaí, no (www.kiwibar.com.br).
A minha intenção é fazer um set warm up music até as 18:30, a partir daí, DJs convidados assumem o mixer com house music e progressive house até o fechamento do bar.

UNION: Quais foram os principais lugares que você já tocou e qual foi o mais marcante ?

DJ Giuliano: Bom foram essas, a primeira exxxperience em Curitiba. O Solipse festival que aconteceu na Zâmbia 2001 (Africa) que também foi o momento mais sério da minha carreira, toquei 3 sets lá que foram 2 a tarde e 1 a noite!!! O Voov e Shivamoon(2002) na Alemanha também marcaram muito...,todas as Trancedance, Klatu club junto com Neuromottor. club Freak*a*delic, onde houve a abertura do primeiro Chill Out em Club no Brasil e, é claro, Kiwi Bar na virada do ano novo (2004), onde 6 mil pessoas dançaram (dont stop til you get enough) Michael Jackson (hahaha)
